A Unique Security Situation: Emergency Rooms

Emergency RoomWhen it comes to security challenges in healthcare facilities EDs (Emergency Departments) are truly unique.  There’s a diversity in not only the people that come in and out, but the services provided as well.  Never mind the fact that EDs are open 24/7 and can’t deny treatment to anyone.  This leads to a complicated dynamic that poses security risks to staff, patients, and guests.  As a leading security systems provider in northern and central New Jersey, our team at Perfect Connections, Inc. is adept at assessing the security risks associated with different environments, including healthcare facilities.  We’ll take you through some of the most common risks associated with EDs and how a comprehensive security system can help.

One of the most prominent threats to safety in EDs is the mentally unstable or violent patient (the two often go hand-in-hand).  There have been numerous accounts of attacks, both physical and verbal, on medical workers across the nation.  It’s no surprise either, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, RNs (Registered Nurses) alone face a 6.1 per 10,000 chance of being assaulted on the job.  That’s triple the chances of an average American worker.  As these assaults are typically unpredictable and unprovoked, how can a hospital be prepared?  Some have employed security guards as an addition to systemic precautions.  Others, like Dr. Melissa Barton of Detroit Sinai-Grace Hospital have pushed for security enhancements such as metal detectors as hospital entrances.  Barton on hospital security, “It’s a balance between having patients and facilities and visitors feel welcome and that we want them to come and see their loved ones, versus also offering safety and a feeling of security for those same people.”

When you think of an ED, what comes to mind?  It’s unlikely a peaceful and relaxed scene, right?  You have any number of people coming in and out who are all dealing with an “emergency.”  This can lead to high tensions, aggravated emotions, and stress.  These feelings can escalate quickly especially when there is overcrowding which can lead to long wait times, further exacerbating the tumultuous atmosphere.  When situations do escalate within an ED, they can quickly turn violent.  Aside from high stress situations driving people to act out, there are other reasons why hospital violence occurs.  Take for example a law in Kentucky designed to keep those who commit misdemeanor crimes out of jail in order to free up space for the more dangerous criminals.  As a result Kentucky hospitals found themselves turning into a “dumping ground” for alcoholics and the disorderly, often homeless, which would have otherwise been imprisoned.  This leads to higher security risks for intake staff and other patients waiting for treatment.

As previously mentioned public hospitals can’t typically refuse care to anyone, including convicted felons.  This can pose a hazard to hospital security, its staff, and patients.  These dangerous patients are sometimes referred to as a “forensic patient” or “prisoner patient.”  A forensic patient is typically accompanied by a law enforcement individual, but there is still risk involved.  These types of patients can attempt to escape by using force and they tend to have erratic behavior.  A study performed by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) in 2010 on prisoner escape attempts showed that patients were able to obtain weapons through altercations with law enforcement, hospital security, or using their own restraints.  Preventing these high risk patients from escaping or harming other patients is an issue.  If there were a section of the ED or hospital that was designated for high risk patients it might be easier to contain them using secure access controls.  Some hospitals may already have a designated area for these types of patients but those that don’t may want to have a security systems expert assess their risks and how to deal with them.

How can enhanced security help?  Certainly having physical security guards in place can help deter crime, but installing a comprehensive security system can help prevent disastrous situations.  By having an access control mechanism installed you can limit who can enter which areas.  This would help prevent loss of narcotics and limit the locations where violent behavior or outburst can potentially occur.  It could also help contain violent patients or guests to specific areas.  Having a monitored and recorded surveillance system would help catch criminals and provide evidentiary support in their prosecution.

Securing Your Home During a Renovation

Hiring the right contractor

When it comes to your home and family you can never be too careful.  You wouldn’t hire a babysitter without doing your research first, the same holds true for finding the right contractor.  A background check is a great way to tell whether or not the company you want to hire is reputable or not.  Here’s the caveat, companies with bad reputations or failed business sometimes shut down and reopen under a new name (ACE Private Risk Services).  So how can you really be sure of who you’re hiring?  In many cases architects are involved in the renovation process, they should have good insight into which companies are trustworthy.  Ask your friends and family for referrals.  Use websites like Angie’s List to find out what other customers think about the contractor you’re interested in hiring.  Gain as much knowledge about the company/ies of interest before making a final decision.

When signing a contract be sure it delineates who is responsible for what and that the associated cost makes sense.  Sometimes contractors will low-ball the contract price and try to add cost later, blaming it on “unexpected” issues.  Ask the contractor directly for a review of their past or most current jobs, those with nothing to hide should be more than happy to abide.  After all it’s your home, you want it done right.  It is also important from a liability standpoint to be sure the contractor has insurance for his/her self and their workers, you don’t want to incur the cost of someone being injured on the job.

Utilize existing security features

If you have an existing security system in your home, use it to keep an eye on the renovation process.  Having remote monitoring access through your video surveillance system will allow you to check-in on your home while you’re away at work or can’t be there.  While you’re not out to purposefully incarcerate or accuse the people working on your home of being lazy, trying to rip you off, or stealing it is in your best interest to protect your property.  Many, if not most, contractors are reputable and diligent in their work, but nobody is perfect and unfortunately there are companies that do try to take advantage.

Take for example this story of a homeowner who was having the exterior caulking on his windows reinforced.  The hired contractor had quoted him for 8 hours of work.  The homeowner set up a wireless camera to monitor activity outside his home for when the contractor was scheduled to be working.  He was able to see when the contractor arrived, and the hours he spent sitting in his truck NOT performing the agreed upon work.  Ultimately, the contractor performed only 5 of the quoted 8 hours of work.  When the contractor was paid for the 5 hours he couldn’t dispute it as the homeowner had irrefutable evidence (story courtesy of iWatchLife.com).  Negative experiences aside, monitoring your home during construction can also validate the expertise a contractor has, giving you incentive to recommend them in the future.

In all likelihood if you have an existing security system, you’ll be adding on to it in the new space or at least altering it during the renovation process.  Including your security system provider from the beginning is a beneficial tactic.  If you have a hardwired security system, what better time to include the security provider than when the walls are already open?  It will save you from the cost of having to tear them open after the fact.  Plus, your security expert/s can address your concerns before construction starts and openly communicate with the other professionals involved.  Having that dialogue between the different professional services from the start will create a smoother and more productive process.

Securing the job site

Aside from hiring the right people to complete the job, you want to make sure the job site is adequately secured.  One of the most basic, yet often forgotten or disregarded ways to help prevent damage or loss is to lock your doors and windows.  While it may not stop someone from breaking in, it will certainly slow them down.  This will help control who has access to various parts of your home during the construction process as well.

Alert your security system provider of your upcoming changes, they’ll likely have suggestions on how to protect the exposed portions of your home.  Like preventing fire damage by installing temporary smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.  Confirm with your security system provider that your current fire alarm system will still function throughout the duration of the project.  Even having your security systems expert install additional, maybe temporary, surveillance equipment will help you keep an eye on what’s going on.

Keeping the job site clean and free of unnecessary debris should be part of the construction crew’s responsibility; it makes for a safer work environment and lessens the potential of property damage and injury.  It also helps prevent damage to products being used in the renovated space.  You don’t want to get charged for parts your own construction crew broke, right?

  1. Identify the scope of the plan.
  2. Identify key business areas.
  3. Identify critical functions.
  4. Identify dependencies between various business areas and functions.
  5. Determine acceptable downtime for each critical function.
  6. Create a plan to maintain operations.

Once you have a plan the best way to ensure everyone is on board and prepared is to test it.  What good is a plan if no one knows how to use it?  Have frequent drills so you, your employees, and all personnel understand what they need to do in the event of an emergency.  Testing and running drills will eventually create more of a “muscle memory” response so precious time isn’t wasted trying to figure out which steps to take.  If you’re stuck on where to begin consider hiring a professional and reference online guidelines like the Planning and Responding to Workplace Emergencies provided by OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration).

How does having a security system affect emergency situations?

Providing your employees with an emergency plan or protocol is important.  The buildings facilities manager will likely already have a plan for the entire building that includes alarm testing, drills, and escape routes.  You may be the type of company that wants to run your own emergency drills.  Running emergency drills is a great way to ensure your employees are prepared.  However, when running preparatory drills be sure to inform your neighbors and the facilities personnel to avoid confusion and unneeded chaos.  It might be beneficial to hold a meeting about emergency procedures with the building manager and neighboring company owners to come up with a cohesive plan.  That way you reduce the risk of complete panic if everyone is on the same page.

Construction and renovation within office buildings is not uncommon.  Redistributing space or accumulating office space can pose a security challenge for tenants.  During a renovation your building becomes a host to a multitude of people that you aren’t used to seeing on a daily basis.  This includes construction workers, architects, inspectors etc.  While these people are likely respectable individuals, you don’t know them, and you may not want them accidentally entering your space.

While most would agree a comprehensive security system is better to install during the initial stages of building construction, it doesn’t always happen that way.  In some buildings you may have tenants that opt for an individualized security system after moving in.  When acquiring space, you may run into old or inefficient security systems that do not align with what you might have in your current space.  To ensure your security system is cohesive and efficient you should involve your security systems provider during the initial design phase for the new space.  This will help make sure your current space is protected during the construction phase, and that all components will work seamlessly once completed.  According to Sean Ahrens, a senior security consultant with Schirmer Engineering (in regards to access control and alarm monitoring), “The only way to address those issues is with communication during the design process.”  He’s right, and this concept applies to all security issues a tenant may have.

NFPA: Are In-home Sprinklers The New Standard?

Fire SprinklerYou’ve probably seen sprinkler heads poking out of the ceilings at your office, a hospital, or other public venue where they are generally a code requirement.  But have you ever seen one in someone’s home?  Odds are probably not.  They are currently not required in private residences, but a new proposed legislation by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) aims to change that.

The Fire Sprinkler Initiative wants to make fire sprinklers a requirement in all new construction single and two family homes.  All homes should already have fire extinguishers and up to date smoke and carbon monoxide detectors so why would sprinklers be necessary?  Let’s find out.  As a security systems provider in central and northern New Jersey for the past 22 years our team at Perfect Connections, Inc. understands the importance of proper fire safety equipment.  We provide comprehensive home security systems that include the appropriate fire alarms and smoke detectors.

As a society we’ve gone countless years without in-home fire sprinklers, so why the push for it now?  Throughout those countless years, there have been countless incidents of house fires that have resulted in severe injuries, even deaths.  In fact over 85% of all fire deaths in the US have taken place in the home.  Approximately 3000 Americans die every year from house fires.  According to the NFPA, having an in-home sprinkler system along with working smoke detectors cuts the death risk by 80%.  The 2015 edition of the IRC (International Residential Code) requires fire sprinklers to be included in all new home construction.  The ICC (International Code Council) has specified that this requirement will be incorporated gradually over a period of 20 years.

States that have adopted the IRC requirements for one and two family homes are California, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  Many other states have adopted the requirements for townhouses up to three stories.  Sprinkler installation in new construction homes seems like a no-brainer but not all are so eager to jump on the bandwagon.  In fact the NAHB (The National Association of Home Builders) has vehemently been opposing the proposed legislation and IRC requirements since the beginning.  NAHB’s communications director, Calli Schmidt in opposition to mandatory legislation has said, “The only way for sprinkler manufacturers to make money is to focus on mandates. Otherwise, they’re not financially feasible.”  This has been refuted by organizations for the cause pointing the finger right back at the NAHB saying they’re disregarding the safety of civilians and only concerned with selling homes.

This ongoing battle between the NAHB and supporters of the proposed legislation makes it unclear who has the best intentions for the homeowners.  Both sides claim profit as the top reason for opposition or acceptance.  The NAHB of Virginia purported the sprinkler manufacturers “hijacked” the code writing process in 2008 when they paid for travel expenses of numerous firefighters to attend the ICC meeting.  The ICC Appeals Board disputed this stating, “By unanimous vote that there was no material and significant irregularity of process or procedure.”  Sprinkler advocates believe in-home sprinklers would save not only lives but substantial property damage and loss.  According to the Department of Homeland Security deaths by fire in the United States fell over 40 percent once smoke detectors became mandatory back in the 1970s.  The NAHB believes the percent of saving more lives with sprinklers is minimal in comparison to their cost.  NAHB members are not against sprinklers as a voluntary measure, but to require them in all new homes would increase the cost of the homes themselves potentially threatening the health of the real estate market especially in times of economic hardship.

Whether or not the NAHB’s reasons for opposing the sprinkler initiative hold water, one must look at the facts and evaluate the risks.  According to the NFPA fatality rates in homes with sprinklers vs those without is 80 percent less.  Do financial costs outweigh the cost of losing a life/lives?  No tends to be the immediate response, but no matter how many safety features or preventative measures you take, there is no infallible system or guarantee.  That being said, the benefits seem to outweigh the costs.  The same holds true for home security systems.  Here at Perfect Connections, Inc. we know there is no perfect system, but we provide security systems that have been proven helpful in preventing catastrophe.  If you reside in northern or central New Jersey and are still relying on antiquated security techniques, don’t hesitate to call on our professionals.  Our experts can provide an in person assessment of your security risks and customize a system that is specific to your individual needs.

What’s Your Business Missing?

What’s lacking?

Other areas that tend to be overlooked or under-protected are doors and safes.  While a door typically locks, if it’s not sturdy and linked to an alarm, what’s preventing someone from kicking it in?  To protect your entries, exits, and interior spaces be sure that your doors are not only sturdy and alarmed but protected by some sort of access control.  Whether it’s a swipe card, key fob, passcode, or some form of biometrics, access control will help prevent unwanted entrants.  Safes that are out in the open and easy to grab or crack open provide minimal protection for whatever is in it.  If you’re going to store valuables or cash in a safe at your business be sure it’s secure either bolted to the ground or in a fortified room.

Inadequate protection from fire and carbon monoxide can be a killer for any business.  Having detectors and alarms may not be enough if they don’t communicate with emergency services.  It’s the same idea as the unmonitored burglar alarm, if no one is around to hear the detectors go off a fire could easily escalate to the point of no return.  For the quickest response time, fire alarms and detectors should be linked to a monitoring service that communicates with emergency services.  Proper fire alarms, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be an integral part of a comprehensive security system.  Your business is likely your livelihood, protect it.

Protect Your Home While You’re Away

While everyone needs a vacation now and then, it is important to make sure your home is fully protected before you leave.  Preventative measures will not only help avoid disaster, but allow you and your family to rest easy and enjoy your time off.  There are many steps you can take to protect your home from break-ins and burglary, allowing you to focus on what’s most important-laying out in the tropical sun with an umbrella drink in hand!

Install a Home Security System

Have Someone Stop By or Stay

Having a trustworthy relative or friend/neighbor stop by your home on a regular basis, or even stay there, while you’re on vacation can be a helpful crime deterrent.  It can make it appear as if you and your family are still home.  Having someone there to tend to your plants, animals, and general upkeep will prevent your home from looking uninhabited, which to a criminal means, “open for business.”  Whomever you charge with caring for your home should be given your vacation contact information and spare key in case of an emergency.  There are services where you can hire house sitters/pet sitters, but they’re likely to be pricier than a friend or family member.

Stop the Mail

Unless you already have a post office box, you likely receive mail at your home.  When you are going on vacation or leaving your home for an extended period of time, you want to make sure you have your local post office hold your mail until your return.  A mailbox that is bursting at the seams can tipoff criminals that you’re away.  It’s best to either stop your mail, which you can conveniently do online HERE, or have a trustworthy friend/relative check and pick it up frequently.  The post office can hold your mail for up to 30 days.  This idea holds true for newspaper delivery as well.  If you subscribe to a newspaper, make sure they don’t pile up on your front step or in your driveway while you’re gone.

Time Your Lights

Setting timers for your interior and exterior lights can be an effective crime deterrent.  It’s better than leaving lights on throughout the entirety of your vacation.  Leaving lights on the whole time will not only run-up your energy bill, but create suspicion for criminals who might be watching your house.  They’ll notice that certain lights never go on or off indicating no one is around.  With a comprehensive security system, you can set timers before you leave, and with home automation you can change your settings from afar if need be.

Beware of Social Media

While it may be tempting to share/brag to all of your friends and family on social media about your upcoming trip, it’s not the best idea.  Why?  By posting the time and date of your trip, you’re basically advertising the fact that you won’t be home.  Even with privacy settings set to their limits, be weary of sharing such private information, you never know who is watching, sharing, and searching.  This is important to keep in mind throughout the duration of your vacation.  Again, while posting photos of you and your family in tropical bliss seems innocent, you’re providing evidence that you’re not home.

Locking your doors and windows may seem like an obvious security measure, but it’s easily forgotten.  It’s not uncommon for people to leave back doors or windows unlocked for family members or frequent visitors.  It’s a simple, yet effective, step to take in protecting your home.  Locks are the first line of defense, don’t forget to check them before you leave.

Turn Off/Unplug Appliances

Unplugging or turning off appliances will help save on your energy bill.  Also, it will help prevent potential power surges or electrical fires.  Things like coffee makers, computers, and TVs should be unplugged unless you have someone staying or stopping by regularly.  Unplugging appliances before you leave helps alleviate any worry that you might have accidentally left something on or running.

Alert Local Authorities & Alarm Company

If you’re planning on being away for longer than an extended weekend, it might be a good idea to alert the local authorities.  They may be more inclined to go past your home on their patrol routes if they know you’re gone.  If you have a security system with a monitoring service, it is crucial they are made aware of your leave.  This will help avoid false alarms and make them more vigilant of any irregularities.

Temperature Settings

Depending on where you live you’ll want to adjust your thermostats or time them appropriately.  Homes in the northeast and cooler climates will want to make sure temperatures don’t fall below 55 degrees to avoid freezing pipes.  Home automation allows you to adjust the temperature from afar.  One of the benefits to this technology is coming back to an already warmed up or cooled down home.
